Fortunat Sprecher (1585-1647) was a Swiss lawyer and jurist; first published in 1617 under the title 'Pallas Rhaetica armata et togata,' this is his history and description of Switzerland's canton of Grisons (German: Grabunden), once called Rhaetia as a province under the Roman Empire. His work is preceded by a dedication to the alliance of the three leagues which comprised the Grisons country. Text in Latin. Contemporary overlapping vellum with titling hand-inked to the spine, dated 1864. Vellum shows deep orange-red discolorations particularly to top edge. Binding sound. Light occasional foxing, with '1794' written to FFEP with ink transference to paste-down, interior else clean and free of markings. Engraved header at dedication.
