Latin/English edition of the works of Roman dramatist Terence (BCE 195/185 - 159), translated by English clergyman Richard Bernard (1568- 1641). Quarto. Later half calf and marbled papered boards; five raised bands at spine, with spine titles stamped in blind, decoration in black, and translator and publication in gilt. Boards scuffed, rubbed, edgeworn, with fraying at corners and papered edges. Gilt at spine rubbed. Binding cracked at front inner hinge, else intact; cords strong; binding sound through textblock. Textblock pages edged in red. Marbled paper endsheets. Previous owner has adhered a small slip of paper typed with the book's information to verso of FFEP. Insect damage at center of bottom margin from pages 4-22, ranging from a tiny point to a thin 'V' with both sides less than 1/8-in. Insect damage to gutter margin near spine foot, from title page through to about page 200, ranging in size from a tiny point to a thin line less than 1/8-in. From pages 200-245 there is another incident of insect damage in bottom margin, also near spine foot, ranging in size from a tiny point to a thin line of 1/2-in. None of these incidences extend into the text. Pages toned, with extensive spotting or light dampstaining consistently throughout. Last page is a little frail and worn thin in places. Early owner's notations and underlining inked in margins of first fifteen pages, and to margins of the very last page. Additional underlining in faint pencil throughout, and extensive penciled notes to fly leaves at back (on later paper, part of the rebind).
